Biography

Eva Sajovic Crosland is a socially engaged practitioner and Lecturer on the BA Graphic Design at Camberwell College of Arts. She is also Theory Lecturer on the BA Graphic Design Communication at Chelsea College of Arts.

After graduating in law with a degree from the University of Ljubljana and an LLM from the University of Utrecht, Sajovic studied graphic design and communication on the BA Graphic Communication Design at Central Saint Martins. She has an MA in Academic Practice and is a fellow of Higher Education Authority. For many years she worked as an Associate Lecturer on the BA Graphic Communication Design at Central Saint Martins and a Theory Lecturer on the BA Graphic Design Communication at Chelsea College of Arts.

In her personal practice, Sajovic examines the drivers of global displacement such as the appropriation of localities by capital, poverty, trafficking, culture and climate change. Her practice covers 2 strands: participatory social action projects and photographic social portraiture, where she collaborates closely with the subject to construct the image. Sajovic also explores the role of the artist and designer in an age of political and ecological break-down.

In her teaching as well as her practice she foregrounds collaboration and exchange as tools for engagement and learning. She does this by setting up platforms for self-representation as ways of supporting personal and community resilience. Her focus on participatory and collaborative methodologies comes out of an interest in disrupting the traditional imbalance of power between the artist, the subject and the audience; the teacher and the student. These strategies are particularly useful as they necessitate active participation and challenge traditional conceptions of roles and responsibilities.

In 2014, with the support of Tate Modern, Sajovic co-founded the People’s Bureau, a platform facilitating skill exchange that has since become Tate Exchange Associate and been commissioned by Create London and The Human Library (Bootle, Liverpool).

Sajovic exhibits internationally and had her work commissioned by Tate, Whitechapel Gallery, The National Archives, AHRC, Ffotogallery, CREATE London, Cuming museum, 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning, 47/04, PARC, Siobhan Davies Dance; and supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England, the European Commission, Darat Al Funun Foundation, University of The Arts and the Ministry of Culture Slovenia.
