In autumn 2020, Camberwell College of Arts started work on an exciting new multi-purpose development in Peckham.
This will provide a new 393-room halls of residence building for students of UAL alongside a creative digital hub for students, graduates and local residents.
Due for completion in September 2022, the scheme is being developed for UAL by local Southwark company Hollybrook who previously developed the extension to the College and Gardens House halls of residence at Camberwell in 2018.
UAL Digital Hub
The UAL Digital Hub will be situated on the ground floor of the new building. It will be a combination of a learning centre for local people to acquire essential digital and IT skills and space for creative start-up businesses based in Peckham.
The space will bring UAL students and graduates together with creative enterprises and local people. This will enable collaborative project work that tackles important social issues to take place in the community.
Alongside this work, the Hub will offer courses and workshops for all ages, along with homework classes, mentoring, business support, workshops and screen-based design studios. It is anticipated that up to 30 local businesses could be accommodated supporting up to 70 jobs.
Project steering group
The UAL Digital Hub will be developed through collaboration with local groups representing residents and neighbouring organisations. Members of the following organisations sit alongside representatives from UAL, Southwark Council and Hollybrook on a steering group for the project, with more to be confirmed:
- Mountview drama school
- Bells Garden Residents Association
- Residents of Sumner Road
