MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography (Online) graduate Monica Alcazar Duarte has won the 2014 Mead Fellowship, designed by UAL to support new and recent graduates in the pursuit of excellence in their creative practice.
The Fellowships of up to £10,000, along with the undergraduate-focused Mead Scholarships, are awarded to those who have demonstrated outstanding ideas in practice across a wide range of creative sectors, or the use of creative solutions in other sectors.
The proposed project for which Monica secured the Fellowship, ‘Forerunners’, will involve the production of a series of nine books focusing on individuals who are leading their lives in an extraordinary way.
We asked Monica to tell us more about what she has in store.
“At some level the project relates to the moment we are going through as a society today. Today we find ourselves watching the economic and environmental crises with concern, wondering what is next.
“I am examining a series of questions in this project. How do human beings adapt, survive and change in extraordinary circumstances? How does transition lead to transformation and enable us to face inevitable changes in life?
“It is such an exciting opportunity to have been awarded the Mead Fellowship. As a recent graduate embarking on the next phase of my practice this support is invaluable.
“The fellowship will allow me to further my independent research and produce my next body of work outside the scope of University. It will also enable the exposure of my work to a wider audience.”
Monica is currently preparing to start the practical phase of the project and is looking forward to sharing her discoveries in more detail!
