Congratulations to Luke Franklin who won Lowe and Partners’ 3rd Nova Awards 2013 for his MA Art and Science project ‘4 Bothies’. The runners-up were Colin O’Dowd for his BA Product Design project, STIX Children’s toys and James Beatham for his BA in Fine Art XD Pathway ‘Proposed Solo Show’.

The new Unilever Magic Award was also handed out by CMO Keith Weed to Amy Radcliffe who gradated with an MA in Textiles Futures. Her project ‘Scent-Ography – A Post Visual Past Time’ examines the relationship betweeen people and the effect scents has on us and our past memories.

The Contagious Nova award went to Shinji Toya for his piece Abstract Painter No. 3. Toya developed an algorithm that takes his original painted artworks and randomly selects, crops and layers them to create entirely new pieces, projecting the results on the wall of the gallery as they are produced. More than a million permutations can be generated by the algorithm, producing abstract artworks outside the artist’s control.

There was also the inaugural Azul Award given to the campaign by a Lowe team recognising outstanding creativity. Lowe’s President of its Creative Council, Jose Miguel Sokoloff travelled from Colombia to present the award to Rickard Villard, ECD of Lowe Brindfors Stockholm for ‘Bullying Simulator’ a Digita campaign aimed at tackling cyber bullying.

Tony Wright, Chairman of Lowe and Partners, who originated the initiative said:

“Luke, Colin and James are worthy Nova winners and Amy is great choice for the Unilever Magic Award. I will keep an eye on their careers. I’m of course very proud of our inaugural Azul Award winner, Lowe Brindfors. A strong campaign that takes on a major issue with immense bravery and creativity.”

The 15 shortlisted graduates come from across the world including Japan, Taiwan, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Canada and the UK. They graduated this summer (Lowe and Partners also exclusively sponsors the famous annual CSM degree Shows) in courses including Fine Art XD Pathway, fashion, Art & Science, Product and Industrial Design as well as Textile Futures.
