LCF Director of Social Responsibility, Claire Swift and recent BA Womenswear graduate Rachel Greig recently took part in the CBBC show ‘Turbo Boost’. Turbo Boost is a series dedicated to helping talented teens from across the UK develop and hone their skills in their chosen fields. This episode featured 13 year old Neetu from Hackney who has been learning to sew through Threads, a Children in Need funded programme on the Pembury Estate. Neetu is set the challenge of designing and making a dress for CBBC presenter, Michelle Ackerley, to wear to LFW. In addition to LCF’s tutelage, Neetu is mentored by noted fashion experts such as Patrick Grant, Henry Holland and Frank Strachan. In the show Claire Swift tasks Neetu with the white shirt challenge – a task all first year design students face. Neetu, with the help of Rachel, was given four hours to create a new white shirt using the selection of fabrics and techniques at her disposal. Claire critiqued the finished sample and advised Neetu on her skill set.
Rachel went on to assist Neetu in creating a dress to be worn to London Fashion Week. The dress was a resounding success at LFW and received high praise from industry figures.
Taking part in programmes such as Turbo Boost and working with initiatives such as Threads plays an important part in LCF’s Better Lives ethos and Widening Participation strategy, encouraging people from diverse backgrounds to consider fashion higher education.
