This week University of the Arts London (UAL) have taken over Royal Festival Hall on London’s Southbank for their graduation ceremonies. On Thursday it’s the turn of London College of Communication (LCC) graduates to don their gowns.
And LCC are thrilled they’ll be joined by some incredible names from the world of media, design, film and photography to impart some last words of wisdom before our class of 2013 throw their hats into the sunny skies.
We’re delighted that journalist and presenter Jon Snow, graphic design legend Malcolm Garrett, Filmmaker John Akomfrah and photojournalist Donald McCullin are being awarded honorary doctorates by UAL and will be joining LCC graduates for the occasion.
Jon Snow
We have a lot of time for Jon Snow. And we’re delighted the Channel 4 News presenter has had time for LCC over the past few years. Talking at LCC’s annual Hugh Cudlipp Lecture in 2012 he spoke passionately about why he believed ‘we are poised for journalism’s finest hour’. And earlier this year in conversation with UAL students he gave us a more intimate insight into how events shaped him as a journalist and why he believes today’s graduates have the opportunity to shape a ‘golden age of journalism’.
Malcolm Garrett
There’s something in Malcolm Garrett’s style which chimes with something at the heart of LCC Graphic Design. A leading figure in the graphic design industry for the past 25 years, Garrett produced his first professional work for punk rock group The Buzzcocks – his designs were part of LCC’s The Art of Punk Exhibition in 2012 – and his subsequent work for bands such as Simple Minds and Duran Duran helped to pioneer a new design-driven culture within the UK music scene. Since then Garrett has embraced new technologies and was the first Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) to be recognised in the field of interactive media. He is the chairman of judges for the annual Design Week Awards and a visiting lecturer at UAL.
John Akomfrah OBE
John Akomfrah is a film director and screenwriter, highly acclaimed for his exploration of radical new forms of film-making and his questioning approach to documentary film. His work aims to give a voice to those often excluded from traditional media narratives. Since 1986, Akomfrah has directed 14 films, many of them short documentaries, beginning with his debut film Handsworth Songs (1986.) He was one of the founding members of the Black Audio Film Collective (1982 – 1998), which examined Black British identity through film and media and is a Governor at the BFI. Akomfrah visited LCC in 2012 to give a talk alongside MA Documentary Film course leader Pratap Rughani and to show two of his films.
Mr Donald McCullin FRPS CBE
Donald McCullin is an internationally renowned British photojournalist, most famous for his coverage of the Vietnam War and the Northern Ireland Conflict. A large part of his career has also been spent photographing urban deprivation and unemployment and poverty in the UK. He has won numerous awards including the Cornell Capa Award and was the first ever photojournalist to be granted a CBE in 1993. He is the author of several books including Don McCullin in Africa (2005) and Shaped by War (2010.) More recently he has turned his attention to landscape photography and still-life works. A documentary film was recently made about his life.
