We’d like to congratulate Daniel McMahon, a graduate from Camberwell’s BA 3D Design course who is one half of the team who has designed the Plume Mudguard, nominted in this year’s Designs of the Year competition by the Design Museum.
Designed in partnership with Patrick Laing, the Plume mudguard is a recoiling bicycle mudguard which maintains a thin, sleek profile when protecting the rider’s back and when it is not needed can be rolled neatly away into a tight circle under the saddle. This unique and simple design was intially funded by a Kickstarter campaign which raised a total of $56,295, 312% of the original amount the team had hoped to raise to get the scheme running. A year on, and it the first run has sold out, catching the eye of industry leaders including practicing designers and architects, curators from institutions, academics and tutors from design schools and selection of journalists and writers, and securing this nomination in the Designs of the Year award.
These awards are the Design Museum’s annual exploration of the most innovative, interesting and forward-looking design of all kinds, from around the world. A winner from each category will be selected by an international jury and overall winner from the category winners will be awarded the Design of the Year. Past winners include The London 2012 Olympic Torch and the iconic Barack Obama ‘Progress’ Poster designed by Shepard Fairey.
