An exciting exhibition dedicated to the legendary American letterpress printers Hatch Show Print has just opened at Chelsea Space. Based in Nashville, this is Hatch Show Print’s first solo show in the UK. Established in 1879, they have created vibrant and punchy posters for everything from product advertisement to for political rallies but most notably for country music stars and blues, jazz, and rock n roll bands including work for musicians such as Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Aretha Franklin, and Neil Young to name but a few.
This exhibition showcases their unique style and how this has reflected the changing trends in popular culture from the 1920s to the present day.
The Private View last Wednesday was a great success, kicking off with a talk from curator and manager of Hatch Show Print Jim Sherraden who enlightened us to the history and continual innovations of their print art. Back at Chelsea Space, visitors were treated to beef jerky, Jack Daniels and some wonderful live music from Nashville’s very own Nedski & Mojo – Ned Luberecki on banjo and Stephen Mougin on guitar.
If you didn’t make it to the private view, two more compelling talks will be taking place over the next few weeks. Jim Sherraden will present a gallery talk tomorrow, Saturday 16th November exploring a personal response to the exhibition. And on December 4th, Graphic Design lecturer Nigel Bents will be giving a Letter Press Manifesto Talk at the Chelsea Lecture Theatre. Don’t miss out – book your reservation to secure your place.
