On 26 November 2013, Central Saint Martins hosted an event to celebrate the creation of the Helen Scott Lidgett Studio Award. The Award has been created in partnership with Acme and Central Saint Martins and provides vital support for students’ transition between MA study and the world of professional practice. The event also marked what would have been Helen’s birthday and provided a timely opportunity to exchange fond memories of the former UAL Governor and CSM alumna. Included among the 100 or so guests were Helen’s close friend Sarah Brown and wife of the ex-MP, art critic Louisa Buck, and artist Richard Wentworth. The evening was generously sponsored by Laurent Perrier.

In a speech, Louisa Buck emphasised the importance of the new award in support of emerging talent at a time of considerable financial hardship for young arts graduates. She urged those present to donate to ensure the continuation of the award. This year’s Studio Award winner Jamie Hosegood, who graduated from CSM MA Fine Art course this year, also expressed is gratitude and the opportunities it had opened up in professional life.
The Helen Scott Lidget Award provides a CSM graduate with valuable support, including a rent-free studio for 12 months, provided by Acme Studios and a bursary of £5,000. Mentoring opportunities, both from a professional artist provided by Acme, and from the Helen Scott Lidgett Fund Committee, are also awarded to the lucky recipient.

Thanks to generous donations on the evening, funding has now been secured for the 2014/15 Helen Scott Lidgett Studio Award. Our goal, working with Acme and CSM is to be able to continue to offer this award to promising MA graduates for years to come.
