The EU Settlement scheme allows you and your family members to get the immigration status you will need to continue to live, work and study in the UK. This status means you can continue to be eligible for:
- public services such as healthcare and schools
- public funds and pensions
- British citizenship, if you meet the requirements and want to apply.
Before you start your online application you'll need to complete a few steps:
Step 1
Read through the ‘Apply to the EU Settlement Scheme (settled and pre-settled status)’ on the GOV.UK site to check your eligibility and what you will need to do in the process.
Step 2
Confirm your identity. To do this you will need your biometric passport or residence card. This can be done either via an app available on Android phones, by post or in person. If you don’t have a biometric document you will have to confirm your identity by post or in person. Find locations from the link below.
Step 3
Document residence in the UK
Pre-settled status
If you’ve been in the UK for less than 5 continuous years, you will apply for pre-settled status. You will need to upload your ‘Student Status’ letter to show you’re living in the UK. Find it in the Student Portal after you’ve enrolled.
Log in to your Student Portal > go to ‘my Enrolment’ > ‘my Study Details’ > select ‘Download status letter’
Settled status
If you’ve been in the UK for 5 continuous years, you can apply for settled status. If you have a National Insurance number and worked in the UK, your application will automatically link to HMRC UK tax records to establish the duration of your residency. Please see the UK Home Office website for other types of acceptable evidence of residency.
Step 4
Take a digital photograph. As part of the online application, you will be asked to upload a recent digital photo of your face.
Step 5
Criminal convictions. If applicable, you will be asked to provide any information about criminal convictions and these will be checked against UK crime databases.
