For some months we have been considering how we might be able to pay the London Living Wage (LLW) to staff who work for outsourced contract providers to UAL. We already pay at least LLW rates to all our directly employed staff including those on casual contracts.
The senior team here and Governors are very supportive of the principle of LLW but we have to consider the practicalities of natural breaks in contracts to make this happen. There are still negotiations to finalise but, as we have an opportunity of a contractual break in part of our cleaning contract later this year, we are planning on implementing LLW for all outsourced cleaning staff in the final quarter of 2014. We are also making a commitment now to pay the LLW to all other contracted staff when those contracts are due to be re-tendered.
I know this has been an important issue for colleagues and the Students Union so we are delighted to be able to take positive action on LLW before the end of the year. I’m sure that colleagues welcome our positive stance on this issue
