UAL has been awarded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted for its Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (FAD) provision.

Of the UK universities which provide FAD, UAL is the first to achieve the ‘Outstanding’ grade under the newest inspection framework, and the only one to have achieved the ‘Outstanding’ grade for all four areas of an inspection.

Studying FAD is a route into practice-based undergraduate study. It is a year-long course giving students the opportunity to explore various art and design disciplines, experiment with a range of materials, methods and approaches, and build a portfolio of work.

Nigel Carrington, Vice-Chancellor at UAL, commented:

“This is a well-deserved achievement which reflects our excellent teaching, the calibre of our students and the dedication of all our staff involved in planning, supporting and delivering our teaching. It is the result of a lot of a hard work by our staff, especially those involved in the management and delivery of the FAD provision over recent years as we have moved to a more focused delivery.”

The 4 areas of inspection in which UAL was ranked ‘Outstanding’ are:

  • Effectiveness of Leadership and Management
  • Teaching, Learning and Assessment
  • Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare
  • Outcomes for learners

In addition to the FAD provision at UAL, the University is the biggest provider of the qualification across the UK through its Awarding Body with nearly 100 FE Colleges providing FAD for more than 6,500 students.
