Excellent teaching at UAL
Teaching at UAL is excellent. Our lecturers and technicians prepare students to become leaders in their fields following graduation. Our glittering list of alumni and their achievements testifies to the effectiveness of our education. In 2016, HEFCE judged our teaching world-leading, with the award of the Institution Specific Teaching Allocation.
The government recently introduced the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) to measure the quality of teaching in higher education. It is based on a range of metrics, none of which directly measures teaching quality, combined with a written submission against set criteria.
As a result of this process, UAL has been awarded a Silver TEF rating alongside other global universities, including King’s College London, UCL, Warwick and Manchester. This is the second highest TEF award, but this positive outcome does not alter our view that TEF is a fundamentally flawed way of assessing excellent teaching.
Our aim now is to continue to work closely with government to push for changes to the process. This will ensure a future TEF can recognise the true strength of teaching in this University and our collective commitment to the ongoing enhancement of our students’ creative learning.
