We appreciate that one size does not fit all. This is why we have devised training for groups from all over the world, many of whom come back year after year. Please see below for a selection of the bespoke training that we can organise for groups of academic students and those looking to hone their professional skills.
Fine Art Summer School: South Korean University
Since 2011, a renowned South Korean university has been collaborating with Chelsea College of Arts and sending their students to London for two weeks during the summer to take part in a tailored Fine Art course. The students, who all came from an art background, took on a project brief which had to be completed by the conclusion of the course. They then applied a range of processes, applications and concepts to their brief, testing themselves and stretching their skills. The students expanded their knowledge with the help of research, gallery visits and practical exercises in their chosen subject areas – be it drawing, painting or life drawing. Working in the studio under the guidance of our expert tutors, the students gained confidence and developed as artists, all the while enjoying the vibrant cultural life of the capital city of London. They were able to visit cutting-edge galleries including the White Cube, the Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery, as well as spend time exploring the city streets and taking in some of its well-known tourist attractions. The Fine Art Summer School culminated in a final show, open to the whole Chelsea community.
Art and Design Summer School: Young Russian Students
Every summer, a group of students from Russia visit Chelsea College of Arts and enjoy two weeks of art and design classes.. The students experience life at one of the world’s renowned art schools, while also taking advantage of the rich mix of culture and creativity to be found in the capital city of London. This Art and Design Summer School gave the students an opportunity to sample a wide range of mediums, techniques and technologies across diverse subjects including graphic design, fine art, fashion textiles, photography and interior design. The students were also able to benefit from accompanied trips to some of London’s numerous galleries and museums, including the Cartoon Museum, the House of Illustration, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Natural History Museum. During the course, the group learned about both practice and theory and were invited to consider how to identify themes of interest, to generate material for the development of ideas, and how to record ideas through drawing. The students worked on many set projects and produced a wide range of work, giving them the perfect opportunity to develop their portfolios.
Editorial Design: Bahrain University
A group of Bahraini university students joined us at Chelsea College of Arts for a four-day course in editorial design. The students – who all came from a graphic design and interior design background –wanted to focus on independent publishing and on fanzines. After taking on the project brief, they carried out independent research on their chosen theme, working up ideas in the library before presenting their ideas to the group. After the presentation, the students developed their themes further through considering such things as type, text, image and layout. The next stage was to create flat plans and decide on cover designs for their fanzines, together with possible titles. This bespoke course was part of a nine-day educational trip to London for the Bahraini students, who had plenty of time to experience the vibrant creative life of the capital before returning home.
Interior Decoration: Chinese Interior Design Professionals
An intensive five-day course on interior decoration was created specially for a group of interior design professionals from China. The course was devised to give a flavour of the history and context of interior decoration here in the UK. The students were able to contextualise what they were learning in lectures with trips to British art galleries, Brighton Pavillion, the Geffrye Museum, an English country manor and a tour of a designer London hotel. By the end of the course, the interior designers had gained an understanding of UK interior decoration from the point of view of professional practice, the history of interior decoration and style, and the European influence on modern design. The chronology of style history, cinematic interiors, plus reclamation and antiques recycling were also referenced on this theoretically in-depth interior decoration course.
Interior Design: Chinese Interior Design Professionals
Interior design history and contemporary practice were both investigated in this bespoke nine-day course, devised for a group of design professionals from China. The designers learned about the history of high-end interiors in the UK, on a course that took in some of the UK’s most famous stately homes, as well as the Royal Palace of Hampton Court. A trip to the Geffrye Museum provided an insight into the history of domestic interiors, including the variegated use of materials and textiles from the past and today. Students also learned about restaurant design from a tutor with her own extensive restaurant design experience, while aspects of hotel interior design were also touched upon. Finally, a visit to a contemporary interior design practice allowed the students to soak up the unique atmosphere and working practices of a modern interior design studio in London.
Introduction to Interior Design and Decoration for Advisors: UK Retail Organisation
Employees from a well-known department store joined us at Chelsea for this week-long intensive design and decoration course, which gave them the skills and tools to be able to advise and provide tips to customers doing up their home. The course took the employees through the development stages of creating a design scheme for a residential property, from the initial brief through to a final presentation. Over the course of five days, the students were immersed in design ideas and techniques, discovering along the way how to draw a room plan to scale, how to incorporate ergonomics in their furnishing layout, and how to use textiles within a given space. They also found out about colour relationships and became familiar with how to collate, organise and mount samples. At the end of the course, the students presented final mood boards and colour charts devised for a variety of hypothetical customers.
Art Handling and Conservation: African Bank Executive
We tailor made this wide-ranging course for an employee of an African bank, who was introduced to numerous aspects of art handling and conservation over a period of nine days. The student followed an intensive timetable of lectures and workshops on art handling, conservation, marketing, styling and visual merchandising. Other aspects of the course included how to prepare artworks for hanging and installation; the techniques used for spacing and measuring up locations in preparation for installation; the dos and don’ts of packing, moving and crating works of art; and the use of a variety of tools and fixing methods for handling and hanging art. The course combined practical workshop sessions, lectures and visits to galleries. By the end of the course, the student had the confidence and necessary skills to organise an exhibition for her own company’s exhibiting space.
Copywriting: UK Government Employees
For this unique project, a tutor from Chelsea College of Arts visited a group of marketing professionals from a government department who wanted to refresh their knowledge and skills in creative copywriting. We delivered a series of lectures and exercises in-house to the group, covering such topics as: what makes a good piece of writing, how to tailor copy for a specific audience, how to write eye-catching headlines, straplines and engaging content, and finally how to edit and present their work to a professional standard. The group’s own handiwork was assessed by our tutor, who gave one-to-one feedback to each student on their new-found copywriting skills. The students left the course having acquired the confidence and ability to write sharp, engaging copy for multiple media platforms.
Digital Design: UK Content and Technology Company
A leading content and technology company invited Chelsea College of Arts to provide them with a thorough introduction to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. A detailed course outline was created for the company, tailored specifically to suit its needs and the work it does. Over the course of three days, the students were introduced to the tools, techniques and operation of Adobe’s digital design software programmes. In Photoshop, they learned how to create, edit and save bitmap files destined for the Internet; while in Illustrator, they gained practical experience in the development of vector-based graphics for web use, which provided a grounding in the core features of the application. The course’s real-life examples and demonstrations offered the students an invaluable insight into the workings of the digital design programmes.
