Description

On this course, you will be taught the design process of creating artwork and imagery for silkscreen printing. With help from your tutor, you will explore various drawing techniques such as mark making and stencil making. You will explore ideas and develop imagery, motifs and patterns to make your own unique silkscreen design that you will use throughout the course. Using binders and medium - used for fashion and interior textiles, you will also experiment with various dye techniques.  With demonstrations, you will begin to learn how Koda Trace is used to print large repeats as well as exploring how the heat press is used to print on polyester - using sublimation inks and heat transfer paper.
 
Course Outcomes
The course will take you through the design process of producing printed textiles, from the beginning to end product. You will leave the course with a small collection of fabrics that are suitable for either fashion or interior.

This course is aimed at anyone aged 15 - 17 years with an interest in printed textiles, fashion textiles and interior textiles; whether you are considering pursuing further education in art or are just looking for a fun holiday experience.

Tutor information

Jessica Chan is a Textile Designer based in South London and has obtained a Masters in Textile Design Course at Chelsea College of Art & Design in 2011 specialising in silkscreen printing, exhaust print and dye methods using natural dyes.  Producing fashion accessories, Chan is mainly influenced by colour and texture within her design practice and has an innovative and technical approach to textiles.  She continues to develop her ideas whilst working at Wimbledon College of Art and also collaborates with Fashion and Textile Designers.




Materials

On the first day of your course, please bring:

  • A sketch book

  • A selection of black ink pens (various thicknesses)

  • Pencils to draw with 

  • A selection of different sized paintbrushes.

Fabric will be provided on the course; but if you are able, it would be helpful to bring: A small collection of fabrics that are either natural fibred or synthetic e.g. cotton, wool, silk, viscose, linen or polyester. You might also like to bring in t-shirts, canvas bags or tea towels if you would like to make a finished product.
