Design Matters Too
Since April 2008, the Design Matters programme has piloted creative, educational activities for young people interested in the world of design and architecture, and the relationship this world has to the neighbourhoods in which they live. Development of the programme has considered how to blend the tool of after-school activities with teaching practice that reflects the values of the University - innovation and vision.
This year the project collaborated with The Copenhagen Youth Project (CYP) to deliver a 3-day introduction to Design Matters. Tailored to the needs of CYP, young people involved were asked to think about their ideals for a 'youth space'. Workshops focused on investigation and documentation of the local environment, 2D collage, abstract drawing and modelmaking to develop ideas. The final day crowned the 'Dragons Den' day allowed participants dedicated time with a practicing architect to discuss ideas, create and make a presentation of their final design. The sessions were hosted in CYP's new 'art flat', located behind a shop front on the Caledonian Road. Both Central Saint Martins and CYP look forward to developing further collaborative opportunities in the coming year, as the College looks towards the future as a Kings Cross 'neighbour' to this youth organisation.
