Kathy Schicker

Research Associate

is currently working in partnership with world leading scientists in Canada to develop the design potential of photonic crystal fiber as a component to textile materials. These fibers offer new and sustainable methods of developing smart materials that are responsive, colour changing according to luminosity conditions, capable of data delivery and communication. Kathy’s research includes interactive material applications in the following design sectors: fashion, product, interior and architecture.

Kathy’s MA project 'Woven Light', entailed the design and construction of smart woven textiles that emitted, reflected or reacted to light, culminating in a collection of ground-breaking woven textiles, which react to sunlight.

Kathy's work has been exhibited internationally. Site specific commissions include work for GlaxoSmithKline and Bridlington Hospital through arts and health artist residencies.
