Information for Students

The University takes all reports of bullying and harassment seriously. We will work with students to address allegations and effects on their well-being and their studies with appropriate confidentiality and sensitivity.

Tell someone, so we can help to stop it

Students experiencing bullying and harassment can access advice and support from their tutor, their course leader, their Programme Director, a halls of residence manager, a counsellor, the Student Union or the Diversity Team. 

The University strongly encourages students to share their experiences of bullying and harassment with a member of staff or a service in the University. Delaying telling someone could result in an incident or issue becoming more severe, more difficult to investigate and harder to resolve.

Explore different resolutions

There are a number of ways to resolve bullying and harassment issues, both informally and formally. Who to approach will depend on the whether the reported bullying and harassment is between students or between a student and a staff member, the nature and severity of the problem and what the student seeking support wants in terms of outcome.

Students can:-

  • Talk to a counsellor, the Student Union or the Diversity Team, in confidence, to consider options available, to prepare for talking to the person to seek an informal resolution or for guidance on raising formal complaints.
  • Raise the issue directly with the person to give them an opportunity to understand and address the difficulties their actions are causing you.
  • Ask a member of staff from your course (or your halls, if appropriate) to monitor interactions, to be alert to inappropriate behaviours and/or speak to the person with you.
  • Ask for independent mediation to resolve the problem.
    Taking part in mediation can be a way of addressing reported discrimination or cultural conflict without making a formal complaint. Mediation is facilitated by an external professionally trained mediator to ensure impartiality.   • Report incidents and concerns formally by contacting the Dean with responsibility for your course.

How can counselling help

Counselling offers students space to reflect on their experience, clarify and name the problem, articulate how they are feeling, identify personal strengths, stand up to and challenge the bullying

and harassment and address the impact of the experience on their confidence, self-esteem and well being.

Criminal Behaviours

Where the alleged bullying and harassment behaviour amounts to a serious criminal offence, e.g. physical or sexual assault, students should report this to the police.

In these cases, police investigations and any resulting criminal proceedings would normally need to be completed before the University can take action under internal regulations and procedure.
