How to Apply for Federal Loans

This page outlines the steps students need to complete in order to successfully apply for US federal loans.

UAL will start processing US loan applications for the new academic year from 1 June. Students need to apply at least one month before the start of their course in order to receive the funds in time.

In order to successfully complete their application process students need to ensure they completed all the steps outlined on this page or we will not be able to certify their loans. After submitting the FAFSA students are advised to get in contact with the Student Funding Service by email funding@arts.ac.uk

Step 1. Complete your FAFSA

The first step in getting student aid is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov using UAL school code: G34733. You must do this every year.

Completing a FAFSA is only the first stage in the loan process and students need to complete all US loan application steps outlineed on this page before their loans can be approved.

FAFSA will generate a Student Aid Report (SAR) - this can take up to 48 hours after the submission. Students are responsible for reviewing their SARs, making required corrections and addressing any relevant comments listed on the front page.

Step 2. Cost of Attendance

After submitting their FAFSA students must contact UAL Student Funding Service by email funding@arts.ac.uk and request their Cost of Attendance (COA).

The COA is calculated by UAL and refers to a maximum amount a student may be able to borrow for university related expenses during the academic year. It includes tuition fees, estimated living costs (accommodation, board, study materials, travel and personal expenses), Visa costs, flights and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).

Step 3. MPNs and PLUS credit check

Next students need to submit Master Promissory Note (MPN) - this is a legal document in which the borrower (student or parent) promises to repay their loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. 

There are two types of MPNs: one for Direct Subsidised and/or Direct Unsubsidised Loans (for students) and one for Direct PLUS Loans (for parents or for graduate or professional students). 

All MPNs can be submitted on the StudentLoans.gov website.

To avoid the delay, students need to remember to use UAL school code: G34733 and not the school codes assigned to the individual Colleges.

Students or parents applying for PLUS loans will be subject to a credit check as a part of their PLUS loan application and will need to forward the approval of their credit to Student Funding Service at funding@arts.ac.uk. The credit approval is only valid for 180 days, therefore it is important for applicants to ensure that their credit approval is valid at the time of processing their loan application.

Students are advised to save the documents as PDF files which will be required in the Step 5 when completing the UAL US Loans Application Form.

Step 4. Entrance Counselling

All student borrowers applying for Direct Subsidised, Direct Unsubsidised and Direct PLUS Loans are required to complete the Entrance Counselling if they have not previously received a subsidised/unsubsidised loan or PLUS loan (graduate/professional students only) under the Direct Loan Program whilst studying at UAL.

Entrance counselling is a short online course which will helps students to understand the responsibilities and obligations associated with federal loans and can be accessed at StudentLoans.gov.

Graduate students who have been informed by the U.S. Department of Education about their adverse credit history and have obtained an approved endorser must complete the PLUS loan Entrance Counselling before receiving their loans.

A PDF copy confirming the completion of the Entrance Counselling will be required when completing Step 5 UAL US Loans Application Form.

Step 5. US Loans Application Form

Students who have completed the FAFSA (Step 1) and contacted the UAL Student Funding Service (Step 2), will be sent a link to complete the US Loans Application Form. This form will ask students to specify the amount they want to borrow, attach relevant documents and agree to the UAL terms and conditions. 

Documents students may need when completing US Loans Application Form:

  • Entrance Counselling submission confirmation.
  • MPNs (Direct Subsidised/Direct Unsubsidised Loans and/or Direct PLUS Loans (graduate or professional students). 
  • PLUS credit approval confirmation.

What happens next

  • We will start approving US federal loans shortly after 1 June.
  • Only students who have accepted their offer on an eligible UAL course will have their loans approved, check UAL ineligible course list.
  • After your loans have been approved we will issue US Loan Notification Letter which will be posted to the address you have provided on your US Loan Application Form.
