Robyn and Margaret penetrated Chelsea College of Arts, bound the Dean (again), and stilettoed the door shut, to host CHELSEA CABARET, an evening of unabashed queer performances. The line-up included Queerlesque eruption Rubyyy Jones and the legendary Lavinia Co-op, with a ceremonious opening by the one-and-only Pissing Lamp. The Chelsea Cabaret was unchartered territory of performance freedom. With no filming or photography allowed, performers were invited to take risks celebrating avant-garde ideas of difference. First-timers and professional performers came together to inject a juicy wodge of queerness into the dry hole of academia.

Previously funded projects
TEDxUAL is an independently organised event licensed by TED and run by UAL students. TEDxUAL 2017 focused on the theme of Momentum. It was a day of inspiring talks, full of thoughts, stories and ideas exclusively for UAL students and staff.
Test Lab, in collaboration with the Doctoral Platform at Central Saint Martins, invites all UAL PhD students to attend and participate in a series of presentations that are held on alternate Wednesdays, 4.30-7pm at Central Saint Martins, Library, Pods. Test Lab offers PhD students at UAL an opportunity to present their work in an informal and discursive setting. Students are welcome to present papers on any aspect of their research: a chapter, a case study, an exhibition, an artwork, a workshop etc.
A comedy short produced by NOWNESS, featuring a quirky high-end designer duo recounting the story of how their foray into sustainable luxury artist design descended into gun manufacturing. Postgraduate students from across colleges and disciplines collaborated together to supply objects and artwork resembling eco-chic household items or weaponry to populate the film set.
Led by PhD students, the Craft Readers Group meet on a monthly basis and facilitates critical reading and argument building through semi-structured conversation on specific themes. The discussions aim to clarify aspects of craft theory, build up a thematic bibliography and provide precious opportunities for networking. They also visit craft related events and exhibitions which focus discussion during the monthly meetings.
Graphic facilitation practice involves facilitation, and drawing with and for groups in real time, combining pictures with words to summarise and ‘play back’ key messages to participants. PhD student Pen Mendonca researching this approach organised a workshop that introduces postgraduate students to the concept, practice and potential of graphic facilitation within art, art education and research.
An exhibition which originated from a student led project called Co-Thinking About Future where four curators from different UAL postgraduate courses came together from MA Fine Art, MA Photography, MA Sound Art and MA Animation to exchange ideas on the future of New Media in varying art practices.
Elements from the works of Rachmaninoff, Wagner and Walter Benjamin provide some narrative and atmosphere to a sinister fantasy about a murdering Mexican Shaman called Pavel - all choreographed within a vision of a bloodied futuristic utopia. With help from the UAL Enhanced 'EXTRA' Postgraduate Communities Fund, postgraduate students from Performance Design, Sound Art, Book Arts and Photography are collaborating on the production of a touring show to be shown across Europe in 2016 including Schulz, Berlin, Santarém, Oslo, Lisbon and London.
Susak Expo is a contemporary art biennale that has taken place on the remote Croatian island of Susak since 2006. With help from the UAL Enhanced 'EXTRA' Postgraduate Communities Fund, Chelsea Salon (founded by Cheslea PhD student Joshua Y'Barbo) invited our Postgraduate Community to submit works for an exhibition at the 2016 Expo. There was also an opportunity for a group of students from different Masters courses and colleges to work together on the logistics, hang and curation of the exhibition within the Expo programme.
An initiative to promote experimenting and testing of feminist/queer performance concepts. In monthly sessions the project aims to create a forum across UAL colleges and courses for those who look for an opportunity to try ideas that are not fully developed yet. The project provides postgraduates a performance space, small audience, equipment, drinks and group feedback. The 1st event happened at Chisenhale Studios.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the London Film-makers Co-op and the 40th anniversary of London Video Arts, PG students planned an online exhibition and salon to showcase LVA works previously not widely exhibited. In collaboration with LUX - an international arts agency who support and promotion of artists’ moving image practice - the project sets out to digitise a selection of videos and make them available through an online exhibition. The website will also feature introductions to the videos and a commissioned essay by Central Saint Martin's PhD student Colin Perry. To accompany the live salon event, there will be a handmade zine featuring photographs and archive material from Central Saint Martin’s British Artists Film and Video Study Collection.
In this project ‘The Story of The Panda Bear Told by a Saxophonist who has a Girlfriend in Frankfurt’, postgraduate students created a physical environment to enable a unique study of the effects of virtual spaces and social media on the experience of seeing. Both photography and theatre disciplines were brought together to experiment with live performance, audience participation and image staging.
Chelsea MA Graphic Design Communication students will be working with other postgraduate students from different disciplines to create a series of graphic notations and scores which aims to 'record' a live experience or event which can be 'replayed or re-enacted' for a future audience.
A sound art exhibition hosted at the David Roberts Arts Foundation (DRAF) curated by MA Culture, Criticism and Curation students. A symposium on curating sound art accompanied the exhibition was organised by PG students from MA Culture, Criticism and Curation (CSM), MA Sound Art (LCC) and MA Fine Art Digital (Camberwell). The symposium saw an in conversation with UAL Chair of of Audio Culture and Improvisation Professor David Toop, Ed Kelly, Antonia Blocker and Hamish Dunbar.
On October 15 2015, in the run-up to the 60th Anniversary of the London Film-Maker's Co-op, students will stage an all-nighter in the place where the ideals of 1966 are still active in a photo chemical film production space housing much of the film co-op's original equipment.
This performance based project saw a collaboration between postgraduate students and the artist Stewart Home with a unique performance that saw him leading a 'body weight' exercise class in the Street area of Central Saint Martins.
A professionally selected cross-college postgraduate visual art exhibition, CONFLUX showcased the best postgraduate work produced in the 2014-2015 academic year at UAL, chosen by industry professionals, and curated by postgraduate curators from Goldsmiths University.
One week long experimental project supported by Margate's Resort Studios. Through the production of a blog site and digital artist zine the team explored how contemporary art, design practice and self initiated publications can change perceptions from something ordinary into extraordinary by looking at the communities of Margate - a seaside town in East Kent.
This five day community focused event looked to engage people in thinking about their surroundings and how they can re-use materials to create a public space. The team built a shed like structure from dilapidated materials found in nearby streets, carried out interviews with locals about their life experiences in Margate and from these created drawings and texts to accompany the structure.
An exploration of the intersection of performance and conservation and in particular preserving and documenting ephemeral performance. This resulted in a long table discussion, an evening of performance and led to a performance case study at the Prague Quadrennial 2015 Festival that incorporated elements of documentation.
After hosting a performance by Australian artist collective Soda_Jerk, the team invited the audience to understand "film as a burial crypt where we collectively commune with the dead," to explore themes of hauntology, digital necromancy and the projection event's ability to re-animate film's latent spectres.
This exhibition concentrated very much on the idea of collaboration, with works merging into each other, so that one artist's work was not necessarily identifiable. It was an exercise in questioning the idea of space, but also questioning the way work is traditionally hung.
By setting up a life drawing class with a nude model the team saw how each photographer captured atmosphere, line, movement and measurement. Challenging the reputation of Photography only usually capturing reality objectively, void of subjective interpretation.
One week long experimental project exploring how contemporary art and design practices and technologies can be explored and re-imagined in relation to Lawrence Weiner's 'Declaration of Intent' 1968. Utilising the UAL Special Archives and Collections.
An exhibition which sought to explore the interplay between the artist, the viewer and the location setting, the latter being a 'display space' within an art school context. Here, they investigated the role of the environment with an opportunity to address the Meta Artist/ Curator position.
Project exploring the process of birth and the changes to women's bodies both mentally and physically. Through the installation of a pop up multi-sensory store the team explored new ideas for work within this theme.
A series of Moving Image screenings intended to develop interdisciplinary discussions and debate around significant artist film and moving image works.
This Chelsea Salon event was hosted by CONS Project London, it included over 60 works by artists from the UAL Postgraduate Community and alumni from UAL and Goldsmiths College.
Following a conference at Chelsea College of Arts entitled 'Taste after Bourdieu' which questioned the current relationship between aesthetic judgement and social distinction, a team of students came together to interrogate what was discussed and present their own observations through the building of a confession booth.
Bridging the Divide was a design research symposium and workshop that examined how designers develop and apply design methodologies for interdisciplinary practice in cross-cultural contexts.
An interactive performance art project which explored the notion of happiness among the students and staff of UAL. This was done via interviews and the performative occupation of communal spaces such as college lifts.
By engaging with the many ways dreams nurture artistic work, this exhibition explored the artist's status as a dreamer, a poet, an analyst, a visionary and a 'loony'. The exhibition provided a platform for engaged dialogue between art and unconscious remains creating a playful and inexhaustible terrain.
A workshop held in Central Daint Martins' Street which looked to encourage awareness of well-being though the collaborative process of moving image.
An international interdisciplinary symposium questioning the role of clothing cultures within the changing transnational discourse of consumerism, sexuality, faith, politics and media technology within the youth in South Asia and the diasporas.
