Update on EPIC availability 2018

Applications for EPIC 6 weeks are now open.

Please note EPIC 10 weeks is now fully booked for students who need 6.5 / 7.0. Due to its popularity the course is fully booked for students at this level.

We still have availability on EPIC 10 for BA students who need 6.0 to meet their main course language requirements.

Please ensure you read the important notes and instructions on this page, and note the application deadlines before applying.

Important instructions before you apply for EPIC

Due to the limited number of places on the EPIC courses, students who wish to book a place must confirm eligibility with us prior to booking in full. Here is what you need to do in order to apply:

1. Read the Presessional 2018 Visa Information (PDF 147KB), EPIC course informaton below, and EPIC 10 weeks additional entry criteria (PDF 184 KB) to ensure you are fully informed about relevant course and visa information before you request to book on the course.

2. Email us at presessional-applications@arts.ac.uk confirming the following information and attaching the documents listed:

  • Visa type requested for EPIC
  • Reason for requesting to book, providing documentation of this (where applicable)
  • IELTS result which meets EPIC entry requirements (please see the sections below for entry requirements)
  • Completed UK immigration history information (plus previous UK study visa copies, where applicable). Download the Immigration History Form: www.arts.ac.uk/media/arts/colleges/lcf/courses/international/Tier-4--Immigration-History-Form.pdf
  • Please also ensure your student UAL ID number and a suitable reference (e.g. EPIC 10 eligibility request) are included in your email.

The Presessional team will respond ASAP to confirm whether or not you can go ahead and book in full – please note that once we have confirmed you can book in full, you will have a very short deadline in which to submit your full booking via the applicant portal.

The Presessional team will send you the link to apply for EPIC via the portal only after your eligibility has been confirmed, and on an individual basis. This is on the condition you do not share the link with other applicants.

Please note that any students who apply for EPIC via the portal without first having confirmed eligibility with us will be rejected outright and will not be given a further opportunity to apply for the course in 2018.

What is EPIC?

The Exam Preparation Intensive Course (EPIC) is designed for students who cannot join Presessional due to timing reasons. EPIC focuses on preparing students for the UAL Progress Test. The Progress Test is an examination developed and used by University of the Arts London. It assesses all 4 skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The maximum number of students per class on the EPIC course is 18. Students who obtain the required grades in the UAL Progress Test will be able to progress to their main UAL course without further language testing.

Progression is not guaranteed; students need to obtain the required grades in the final examination to advance to their main studies at UAL.

Who can take this course?

Students who have a conditional offer for an undergraduate or postgraduate course at University of the Arts London and who cannot join Presessional due to timing reasons. Students applying to join EPIC will be required to provide official evidence of why they were not able to join the corresponding Presessional course. Please ensure you have read the EPIC 10 weeks additional entry criteria (PDF 184 KB)

We offer a separate course for Foundation Diploma and Level 3 Introduction students.

You must take an IELTS for UKVI test if you want to study EPIC under a Tier 4 visa. Other internationally recognised certificates may be accepted if you will not be studying EPIC under a Tier 4 visa. If you have a certificate other than IELTS, please contact us well in advance to check whether this can be accepted as proof of English level.

Course content and assessment information

Timetable: 5 hours tuition per day, Monday to Thursday / 4 hours tuition per day on Fridays.

The Exam Preparation Intensive Course (EPIC) focuses on preparing students for the UAL Progress Test. The Progress Test is an examination developed and used by University of the Arts London. It is normally used to assess the language competence of students moving from one course to another within the university. The Progress Test assesses all 4 skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students who obtain the required grades in the examination will be able to progress to their main UAL course without further language testing. Progression is not guaranteed; students need to obtain the required grades in the final examination to advance to their main studies at UAL.

The advantage of taking EPIC compared to other examination preparation courses (e.g. IELTS) is that EPIC is designed specifically for students about to enter UAL. Materials used in teaching will reflect the subjects and disciplines taught and researched at UAL. The language and academic skills developed during EPIC will be very useful and relevant to students on UAL courses.

Students on this course will be able to get to know the university during their studies by using the libraries and virtual learning facilities and by visiting college sites and exhibitions of art, design, fashion and communications-related work.
