What is Presessional?

Successful completion of Presessional means that you can progress to your main University course at UAL without having to take another English language test.

Progression to your main University course is not guaranteed; you will need to pass all of your assessments on Presessional in order to successfully pass the course. However, the pass rate for Presessional is very high. Last year (2015) 96% of students on the course passed their assessments and progressed on to their main studies at UAL.

Presessional is also an excellent opportunity to network with other students before you join your main course. Students are from a wide variety of disciplines and hold offers from all six of UAL's Colleges, so learning and collaborating with others is a great opportunity to build social and creative relationships.

Presessional is not an IELTS course. Although Presessional and IELTS courses both have assessments which test students on speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, Presessional also focuses on preparing students for their University studies.

IELTS courses only focus on preparing for a general exam in English.

Why is Presessional better than an English exam preparation course?

Presessional is a focused English language programme specifically for students studying at UAL. Please read the attached document below for a detailed comparison:

Who can take Presessional?

Only students with an offer for an undergraduate or postgraduate course at University of the Arts London. If you have an offer for an FE course (Foundation or Level 3 Introduction course at LCC or LCF), you cannot join Presessional.

Only students holding a valid UK Home Office acceptable test score, such as IELTS for UKVI. You must take IELTS for UKVI test if you want to study Presessional under a Tier 4 visa. Other internationally recognised certificates may be accepted if you will not be studying Presessional under a Tier 4 visa. If you have a certificate other than IELTS, please contact the Presessional office well in advance to check whether this can be accepted as proof of English level.

Course details

2016 Course content and assessment

The syllabus focuses on the language and skills that you will need in Higher Education, including specific skills for courses at UAL.

You will use a range of materials on the course including core materials, textbooks, newspapers, academic essays, film, visual materials and online materials. Many of the materials we use are specifically for Art, Design and Communications students.

You will be assessed in academic writing, presentation & discussion, listening and reading. These assessments are similar to the assessments used on UAL main courses so they will help you to prepare effectively for your studies at the University.

You will have one-to-one tutorials with your tutor to discuss your progress and receive advice on your studies. There will also be workshops to help you adapt to living in the UK and studying at UAL.

Self-study and independent learning

We want to help you to become a confident and independent student so we will regularly give you homework and self-study tasks.

You will be able to use all of the University facilities including the libraries and IT facilities and University staff will be on hand to show you how to use them.

Induction

In the first few days of the course you will be given induction presentations from a variety of University services. You will be given information on health, housing, banking and Tier 4 visa applications.

As each student has individual needs it is your responsibility to research these areas thoroughly. We suggest that you investigate the UK banking options before arriving. Each bank has different requirements and it is your responsibility to research these before requesting a reference letter from the Presessional Office.

Teaching Hours

Presessional lessons take place Monday to Friday for four hours per day (20 hours per week). You will be expected to do approximately 8-10 hours of self study per week. This is likely to increase when you are preparing for your assessment.

Extra Course Costs and Materials

You may be required to buy some arts materials for the London Project at the end of the course. Students would typically spend around £30-£50 on materials for this project, but the cost may vary depending on your choice of medium.

During the course you will attend various class trips which will require you taking public transport at your own cost. Fare prices are available on the Transport for London website.

We ask that all students bring a tablet or laptop computer for research and assignment work.

Staff Information

Our Presessional staff are all experienced English language tutors. They all have a DELTA qualification and some have an MA in teaching English.

Accreditation

Presessional is accredited by the British Council and BALEAP.

EPIC - Exam Preparation Intensive Course

What is EPIC?

The Exam Preparation Intensive Course (EPIC) is designed for students who cannot join Presessional due to timing reasons. EPIC focuses on preparing students for the UAL Progress Test. The Progress Test is an examination developed and used by University of the Arts London. It assesses all four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students who obtain the required grades in the examination will be able to progress to their main UAL course without further language testing. Progression is not guaranteed; students need to obtain the required grades in the final examination to advance to their main studies at UAL.

Places on the course are limited.

Enquiries are now open for EPIC

If you are interested in joining EPIC, please first read the course information carefully to check that you are eligible to apply.  Once you have confirmed that you are eligible to apply, please email presessional-applications@arts.ac.uk (make sure to include your UAL ID number in the subject line of your email) and attach the following evidence:

• Valid English language test score which meets the EPIC block 1 entry requirements (see entry requirements in course information)

• Evidence of why you were unable to apply for Presessional Block 1 (see eligibility criteria in course information)
