English Language Development
If you are studying a full-time course at UAL and English is not your first language we can offer a wide range of support.
The Language Centre runs free classes, workshops and one-to-one tutorials and will help you with the academic language development and skills you need to be successful on your course and beyond.
Do you need help with a piece of work or a presentation for an interview? Tutorials offer students individual, convenient support and are held in each of UAL's Colleges. For your convenience you can attend tutorials at any College (not just your own).
Three types of tutorial are available most days in term time, and are free of charge:
- Bookable - These take place at all Colleges and at the Language Centre in High Holborn. You must book these in advance. Details can be found on our blog.
- Drop-in - You can arrive any time within the times advertised but you cannot book these in advance. The tutorials take place in all Colleges, usually in the libraries. Timetables are available on the blog.
- Online - Languages for Academic Studies is an online interactive course available through Moodle. The programme is comprised of six different courses each designed to provide you with the language and academic skills you need to complete your studies. Also, you can send up to 500 words to Language Centre tutors by email.
Course specific - These may be offered as part of your main course at UAL. English is taught in the context of your main course subject and supports you with both the language and academic skills you need. Most classes are taught at your College and take place weekly. You will be informed by your Course Leader of times and locations. If you have been allocated one of these classes you will see it on your CELCAT timetable. If you do not have a class scheduled, ask you tutor to contact the Language Centre as we may be able to start a new class.
Academic English skills - These classes can help you improve vital language and skills around areas such as note-taking and giving presentations. They take place at different Colleges throughout the year. The classes are free of charge and must be booked in advance on the blog.
Intensive holiday - These are two or three day courses that take place at the beginning of the Christmas and Easter holidays each year. Intensive courses are a great of improving your English more quickly.
We offer a professional proofreading service to help with your spelling and grammar in extended pieces of written work. Proofreading costs £48 per 2000 words. You must allow at least one week for proofreading to be completed. The minimum word count for documents is 2000 words. To book the service please bring your work to the Language Centre reception or email firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject ‘proofreading’.
