Pre Degree Courses

Applying for a pre-degree course

Before you choose an undergraduate degree course you may want or need to undertake a pre-degree course.

Our pre-degree courses, sometimes referred to as Further Education (FE) courses give you the opportunity to explore a wide range of subject areas before you choose a specialism for undergraduate-level study. The application process for pre-degree study varies depending on the course you’ve chosen, and whether you’re a Home/EU or international student (your tuition fee status).

These are the pre-degree courses currently available at UAL:

The video below will help you understand what we are looking for in a FAD student and advice about what to include in your portfolio. You can also find out more in the dedicated how to prepare your portfolio section of this website.

On this page you can find further information about how to apply, including key dates, to each type of FE course that we offer.

When to apply

Home/EU applicants and international applicants may submit an application to our pre-degree courses for 2018/19 entry from October 2017 onwards.

Application Advice

For all our pre degree courses you will be asked provide a personal statement as part of the application process.

Your personal statement is very important. It’s your opportunity to tell us why you have chosen this course, and about your relevant skills and experience. Your statement should be no longer than 500 words.

It is important that you follow all instructions and check your spam and junk folders regularly as correspondence from UAL may go to these folders.

Foundation Diploma Art and Design

The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course is a common route into practice-based undergraduate study at UAL. We offer this qualification at Camberwell College of Arts and Central Saint Martins. Applications to study the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course must be made through the online application form that you can find on the course pages:

As well as a personal statement, you will be asked to choose either a ‘diagnostic’ or ‘specialist’ pathway.

The diagnostic pathway allows you to study a variety of art and design disciplines before deciding on the area you wish to specialise in during the second part of the course. You will make the decision about specialising in consultation with the course team and your tutor. Please note, in some cases we may offer you a place on a different pathway to the one you requested, depending on our assessment of your skills and abilities.

The specialist pathway choices for the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design based at Camberwell College of Arts or Central Saint Martins are different. You can find out more by checking the relevant course page for further details.

You may also be asked to provide a digital portfolio via our Online Portfolio Submission Tool PebblePad as part of the selection process. You will be only asked to provide this once you have submitted your application.
