Applying for a Further Education course
Before you choose an undergraduate degree course you may want or need to undertake a pre-degree course.
Our further education (FE) courses offer you the opportunity to explore a wide range of subject areas before you choose a specialism for undergraduate-level study.
The application process varies depending on which course you’ve chosen, and whether you’re a Home/EU or International student (your ‘tuition fee status’).
The video below will help you understand the application and selection process. Below, you can find further information about how to apply, including key dates, to each type of FE course that we offer.
Our Colleges offer a range of FE courses, including:
- Foundation Diploma in Art and Design
- Foundation Studies in Performance - Drama Centre London
- International: Introduction to Design and Media Communication (exclusively for International students)
- International: Introduction to the Study of Fashion (exclusively for International students).
How to apply:
Foundation Diploma in Art and Design
Foundation Diplomas in Art and Design are a route into practice-based undergraduate study. UAL offers this qualification at the Camberwell College and Central Saint Martins.
Applications to study the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design must be made via our online application system. We advise that you read the Online Application Guidance document before starting your application.
Application advice: Home/EU students
Home/EU students can only apply for one Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at UAL, and you must apply via the online form.
The deadline to make your application for 2016/17 entry is 12 Midday GMT on Friday 29 January 2016.
If you are made an offer, you must provide us with your qualifications by 31 August 2016.

Application advice: International students
If you’re an International student, you can apply for both Foundation Diplomas in Art and Design. There is no fixed deadline, but we advise that you apply as early as possible.
Applications must be made via the online form. See Application Advice for International Students to find out how we can support you through the application process.
All applicants for Foundation in Art and Design must apply through the online application form.

- Foundation Diploma in Art and Design based at Central Saint Martins
As part of the online application process, once you have completed your personal details and agreed to the Terms and Conditions, you will then receive a further email asking you to complete and submit your Personal Statement and choose a Pathway. Please follow the instructions which you receive via email carefully.
Your Personal Statement
Your Personal Statement is very important as it allows you to tell us why you want to apply for this course and what experiences and skills make you suitable for the course. This statement should be a maximum of 500 words.
We recommend that you work on this separately in Word, create a draft and then perfect it before submitting it to UAL. You may wish to seek the assistance of your tutor or teachers with proofreading this.
You will also be asked to choose either the Diagnostic mode (Pathway) or ONE of the Specialist modes (Pathway).
The Diagnostic Pathway means that you can study all aspects of Art &Design before deciding which area you wish to specialise in during the second part of the course. You will make the decision as to what you want to specialise in consultation with the course team and your tutor. Please note, in some cases we may offer you a place on a different Pathway to that which you requested, depending on our assessment of your skills and abilities.
The online application will request you to provide details of a referee including an email address. This should be someone who knows you in an Academic capacity and is familiar with your work.
An email will be sent to your referee requesting them to send a reference once your online application has been completed, so please make sure you include their email address correctly on the online application form. Referees are expected to provide a reference within 5 days. Please inform them that you have named them as a referee and note that you are responsible for ensuring they submit your reference on time.
Please note that we may not be able to consider your application if you have not completed all the relevant fields in the online form, provided a Personal Statement and a reference for you so it is important that you follow all the instructions and check your spam/junk email folder regularly.
