Student Services or Students' Union?

All the student support services work with the Students' Union (SU). For example, during the Freshers Festival programme organised for all new students, the University services run guidance workshops while the SU organises the programme and social activities.

Staff do sometimes confuse the University's services and the Students' Union. For example, students are sometimes wrongly referred to the University staff for advice on an academic appeal, or to the SU for advice on finding part-time work. Some students are also unclear about our respective roles.

The student support services are run by University of the Arts London staff, with a central base at High Holborn, and offices across the College sites. Our services and roles are described in detail here.

The Students' Union also has offices at key College sites, run by SU staff and elected officers. The SU's work is directed by an elected President and three Vice Presidents, who are students taking time away from their studies. The student officers are supported by a team of permanent staff based at the Student Centre at High Holborn.

The SU has responsibility for assisting students with academic appeals. The Students' Union's independence from the University means they can act as a student's representative during any disputes with the University, such as academic appeals, disciplinary matters and complaints. Student Services often acts as an impartial advocate for a student with outside individuals or agencies, but clearly we cannot take this impartial role where a student's dispute is with the University itself.
