Computers and Equipment

Using a Laptop

  • Position the laptop directly in front of you so you do not have to twist your body or neck to look at the screen (your eyes should be level with the top of the screen)
  • Place the laptop on a surface the same height as your elbows
  • Move all cables out of the way to prevent tripping over them or other safety hazards.
  • When carrying your laptop around, ensure you have a suitable bag with a wide shoulder strap so it does not hurt your neck or back.

Using a Computer

  • Adjust the chair and the monitor to find the most comfortable position. As a broad guide, if you stretch your forearms out in front of you, the tips of your fingers should just touch the screen. Your eyes should be the same height as the top of the monitor.
  • It may be helpful to have a space in front of the keyboard on the desk to rest your hands and wrists when typing.
  • Position the mouse within easy reach, so that it can be used with the wrist straight.
  • Rest your fingers lightly on the mouse buttons and don't press too hard.
  • Adjust the brightness and contrast controls on the screen to suit lighting conditions in the area. Avoid sitting in the same position for long periods. Make sure you change your posture as often as practicable.
  • Ensure you take regular eye breaks, by taking your eyes away from the screen and focusing on a distant object before returning to your work.

Listening to Headphones
When using headphones or earphones there are two things to be aware of:
1. The length of time you listen for, and
2. The volume you listen at.

As a rule of thumb, the louder you listen to the music, the less time you should listen for.
