What issues can be helped?

Students may talk to a counsellor about anything at all which is concerning them, whether it is affecting their studies or not.

Here are just some of the issues students talk to counsellors about:

Study issues

Personal, developmental and relationship issues

  • Relationships with friends/boyfriends/girlfriends or family members
  • Homesickness/ coping with being away from home for the first time
  • Loneliness
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Phobias
  • Sexual issues
  • Trauma
  • Identity issues
  • Dealing with dilemmas or difficult decisions
  • Health concerns
  • Eating disorders/anxieties about food
  • Alcohol and drugs

Cultural/Transitional

  • Adjusting to a new culture/language
  • Adjusting to university life

Counselling can also help with:

  • Dealing with a crisis or immediate concern
  • Support with long term difficulties
  • Getting access to specialist help
  • Referring to other resources

In addition to our counsellors, we also have a mental health adviser, health adviser and chaplain.
