National Minimum Wage

The National Minimum Wage Act 1999 which promotes decent minimum standards and fairness in the workplace. It applies to nearly all workers and sets hourly rates below which pay must not be allowed to fall.

While it is legal to pay the UK National Living and Minimum Wage we recommend employers based in London to consider paying the London Living Wage.

Equality in Employment

The Equality Act 2010 legally protects people from discrimination in the workplace and in wider society. This legislation to provide Britain with a new discrimination law which protects individuals from unfair treatment and promotes a fair and more equal society. Protected characteristics include:

  • age
  • being or becoming a transsexual person
  • being married or in a civil partnership
  • being pregnant or on maternity leave
  • disability
  • race including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin
  • religion, belief or lack of religion/belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation

Some types of jobs which are exempt from this Act will feature an exemption statement.

Valuing Diversity in employment

In addition to ensuring our adverts follow the Equality Act 2010, UAL’s Diversity team engage in several Equality and Diversity projects across the University.  

The Creative Industries Federation in partnership with MOBO produced a report in 2015 on the state of diversity in the UK’s creative industries and the hard economic case for the creative industries to diversify their workforces.
