Common questions about Creative Opportunities

What type of vacancies can be advertised on Creative Opportunities?

We are happy to advertise genuine job or internship opportunities that follow:

  • UK Employment Legislation;
  • Creative Opportunities Terms & Conditions;
  • Our Internship Policy; 
  • and the University’s Equal Opportunities Policy.

All job vacancies must be specific jobs with a guaranteed salary. We do not advertise jobs that offer equity in a business, payment in kind (e.g. vouchers) or jobs that are 'commission only'. All jobs must include a clear salary indication except freelance opportunities where we can list the fee as ‘negotiable’. If a salary is dependent on experience you may list a salary range. We cannot list the salary as ‘competitive’ or 'dependent on experience' for full-time, part-time, temporary or international positions

I want to advertise a different sort of opportunity such as a competition, opportunity to sell work or studio for rent etc. Can I advertise this on Creative Opportunities?

We can only advertise specific job vacancies or internships on Creative Opportunities. We cannot advertise these kind of opportunities.

You may be able to publicise your opportunity through the Careers and Employability website. Please email careers-employability@arts.ac.uk if you would like to do this.

Can I advertise a volunteer position on Creative Opportunities?

We do not currently advertise unpaid volunteering positions on Creative Opportunities.

Can I offer a project to a group of your students?

Creative Opportunities is not involved with student projects. If you would like to offer a project to a group of students please contact the relevant UAL College or contact Careers and Employability.

Can you recommend a student or graduate to me?

Creative Opportunities now offers a bespoke recruitment service to external companies. This service includes a shortlist of qualified candidates, interview coordination at a UAL location and all follow-up services.

How much does it cost to place an advert on Creative Opportunities?

The basic service is currently free for employers who are recruiting directly for their company. But for £180 you can take advantage of our ‘Featured Ad Service’, which includes: 

  • Quick job posting service
  • Appearing top of the page through highlighted posting
  • Social media promotion

Your job posting will appear on Creative Opportunities at top-level search prominence for the first 2 weeks, and 2 more weeks on the board. There is a £100 fee for commercial Recruitment Agencies wishing to advertise vacancies. For further information please read our Recruitment Agencies section with Employers T&Cs. If you are a recruitment agency looking for staff for your own agency, please set up an account as an Employer. There is no fee to advertise jobs within your agency.

How to use Creative Opportunities as an employer

How can I register my job vacancy or work placement on Creative Opportunities?

There are three steps to getting your vacancies online:

  1. REGISTER for an Employer Account. Remember, by registering you have agreed to, and are bound to, our Terms & Conditions.
  2. SUBMIT Submit information about your vacancy through your account by using the ‘Post a Job’ or ‘Post an Internship’ forms.
  3. APPROVAL We check all vacancies to ensure they fit within UK Employment Law and our own policies, which we aim to do within 3 working days of receipt. Once approved, they will appear online straight away.

When will my vacancy appear on the website?

All vacancies, including re-submissions and edited vacancies are subject to approval. So your vacancy will not appear on the website as soon as you submit it. We process submissions in the order we receive them and aim to publicise your vacancy within 3 working days of receipt.* On approval, you will receive a confirmation email to your registered employer account, to say that your vacancy is now online. If there is missing information or if we need to query information with you it may take longer for your entry to appear online.
Please note we cannot offer an express service for urgent vacancies.

*This timeframe may increase if we are experiencing a high volume of submissions.

How long will my vacancy be on the website for?

All vacancies and internships posted through the basic free service are automatically removed from the website after 2 weeks.

If your company opts for our featured ad service your job posting will appear on the site for four weeks. For the first 2 weeks, your job posting will appear as a highlighted post on our Jobseekers homepage and at the top of the search results. After 2 weeks, it will remain on the site but appear lower down on the list as we add new vacancies.

There is also a four week duration for paying recruitment agencies, but this does not include highlighted search prominence.

If, after this time, you haven't filled your vacancy you can log-on to your account and click the re-post button next to your vacancy. Remember to review your vacancy information before re-submitting. For example, you may need to update the closing date or change the contact details.

Will my personal contact information appear online?

We will display the contact details you provide for the ‘application contact details’ section of the registration form. If you do not wish to publicise your personal email address, we suggest you set up a separate recruitment email account. We will record all contact details for our own office information. Please refer to our Terms & Conditions for Employers for details of how we may use your contact details. You can avoid your email being picked up by spamming software by submitting your contact email as yourname[at]emailprovider[dot]com.

When I register for an account I get a message saying the screen name is already taken.

This means someone in your company has already registered an account on Creative Opportunities. If you know who this was, ask them for their screen name and password to access your company's account. If this person has now left, please let us know so we can change the registered email address and you can log on to your company's account.
If you work for a large company, you can create extra accounts. Set them up as new accounts but put your company name and department as the 'Company name', so it differs from the original.

I have forgotten my username or password.

If you have forgotten your username, please send us a message via the Contact Us form and we will let you know what your username is.

If you have forgotten your password, please go to reset your password.

Why is my advert slightly different from the information I originally submitted?

We monitor the wording of all vacancies to ensure they fit within:

  • UK Employment Legislation
  • our Terms & Conditions
  • our Internship Policy 
  • and the University’s Equal Opportunities Policy

Sometimes we will amend the wording of an advert to make sure it fits these policies, and that it follows Government advice on best practice of recruitment advertising. Unfortunately we are not resourced to provide an explanation or alert to every change we make. If you are not happy with changes made to your advert you can choose to un-publish your advert by logging back into your account.

Can I update or amend my vacancy once it has been submitted?

Yes, please log in to your Employer Account and make changes by selecting your vacancy. Please note all changes need to be re-approved and your vacancy will go to the back of the approval queue. So we recommend that you check the details of your opportunity before submitting to avoid delay in it appearing online.
If you have made a major error on your advert, we suggest you un-publish your live advert as this will take it off the website immediately. You can then re-submit the edited vacancy.

My company has a policy not to advertise salaries for our vacancies, can I keep the salary private?

It is our policy to include a clear indication of salary for all vacancies advertised on Creative Opportunities. This allows candidates to make realistic applications. If your salary is dependent on experience you may provide a salary range.

I need to remove my advert early. How can I do this?

Please log on to your Employer Account and click the green 'Online' button.This will remove the vacancy from the website immediately.
If you remove your advert before your closing date you may continue to receive applications up until the advertised date. This is because applicants often print details off and work toward deadlines.

Who will see my vacancy?

Your vacancy will be public on the internet. We only promote Creative Opportunities to students and graduates of the University of the Arts London. But the website has a wider following and the homepage receives over 80,000 unique views every month.

I only want students or graduates from University of the Arts London to apply for my job or work placement – what can I do?

If you only want students or graduates of the University of the Arts London to apply for your vacancy, please state this on your advert. But, under our Equal Opportunities Policy, all vacancies placed on the site will be open to UAL students and graduates from any of UAL's six Colleges.
If you would like to work with a particular College or course please contact them directly. Contact details for Colleges and course leaders are available on the University's website.

Charges for recruitment agencies and online jobsboards

The rates of charge for Recruitment Agencies and Online Jobsboards using our service is as follows:
£100+ VAT per vacancy posted on Creative Opportunities (4 weeks).

N.B. We need your VAT number to invoice you. You will be asked for this when you register.

Employment Law, Job Adverts and employing International Students

Where can I get further information on the National Minimum Wage?

You can find information about current rates and who is entitled to the National Minimum Wage on the DirectGov website or by calling the Pay and Work Rights Helpline on 0800 917 2368.

How much should I offer to pay an applicant?

The National Minimum Wage as of October 2014 is £6.50 per hour. The amount you offer to pay should take into account the level of experience you expect the applicants to have. You could also try looking at similar jobs on Creative Opportunities to work out a realistic salary.

Can I offer the apprentice wage?

Any employer wishing to offer the Apprenticeship rate (currently £2.68 per hour) needs to prove that the job training will go towards a formal qualification within a specific field. This is normally a NVQ Level 2, 3 or 4. For more information, please see the Apprenticeships website. Contact the National Apprenticeships Service as there are a some steps you need to go through to set the apprenticeship up as outlined on their website.

I have a small business and can't afford to pay National Minimum Wage. Can I advertise unpaid work in return for free courses or portfolio building? 

We cannot advertise unpaid work or work that is paid in kind because this may have legal implications. However, many start-up companies find employing students and recent graduates, at the National Minimum Wage, a very cost-effective way of receiving professional services such as branding, filming and web design.

Can I ask applicants to send ideas for my logo or website as part of the application procedure?

Unpaid pitching may have legal implications in terms of the Minimum Wage and we would advise against this. To recruit a logo, web or brand designer it is best practice to ask to see examples of similar work from the applicant’s portfolio as part of the application procedure. Select your favourite designers based on their work and offer them a fee to pitch a couple of ideas. This would enable them to develop some bespoke ideas and allow you to make a confident choice. If you can’t offer paid pitches, we would advise you to ask designers to send their most relevant work to your company.

Can I employ an International Student?

Students who come from outside the EU* on a Tier 4 Visa may work in the UK. But their visa will restrict the number of hours they can work each week. It is usually up to 20 hours per week during term-time for Further Education and Higher Education courses. But you should check the student’s visa for confirmation of each individual’s allowance. Outside of term-time International Students can work an unrestricted number of hours.
Self-employment/freelance work: International Students are not allowed to start their own business in the UK and so should not work on a freelance basis at any time.

Please note, there are certain types of visas that permit study and work without the restrictions imposed by Student / Tier 4 Visas (e.g. dependents visa). If you are unsure as to whether you may employ an International Student then please contact the UK Boarder Agency employers’ helpline 0300 123 4699.

There may be legal implications for employers found to be employing International Students who are breaking the terms of their visa. The employer is responsible for checking the visa status of any International Student that they employ.

*Although Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are not members of the EU, their citizens have the same rights as EU citizens to work in the UK.

Do I have to meet the minimum wage requirements when employing someone in a different country?

As an employer, you should adhere to the UK's employment legislation framework. We check that all UK-based jobs meet the National Minimum Wage and expect all overseas employers to pay at least the local minimum wage. For example, if your company is based in France but you’d like to recruit someone from the UK, you need pay the French minimum wage.

The key legislation you need to be aware of is:

The National Minimum Wage Act 1999 which promotes decent minimum standards and fairness in the workplace. It applies to nearly all workers and sets hourly rates below which pay must not be allowed to fall.

The Equality Act 2010 The Equality and Human Rights Commission works to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequality, protect human rights and to build good relations, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to participate in society. It provides information and advice in relation to the following pieces of important legislation.

The Equality Act 2010 came into force in October 2010 and brings together over 116 separate pieces of legislation into one single Act. Combined, they make up a new Act that provides a legal framework to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all.

The nine main pieces of legislation that have merged are:

  • the Equal Pay Act 1970
  • the Sex Discrimination Act 1975
  • the Race Relations Act 1976
  • the Disability Discrimination Act 1995
  • the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003
  • the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003
  • the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006
  • the Equality Act 2006, Part 2
  • the Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007

We will not advertise vacancies that directly or indirectly contravene UK employment legislation above.

For example, if you state the number of years experience required for a role, this could be seen as indirectly discriminating against younger applicants who hold the relevant skills and qualifications for a role but do not have 5 year's experience.

Can unpaid work placements be advertised on Creative Opportunities?

We do not advertise unpaid work placements on Creative opportunities. We only post paid job vacancies and internships. This is a decision by the University to makes sure that opportunities are open to all, not just those that can afford to work for free. Are students on internships covered by the University’s insurance?

Students who do internships advertised on Creative Opportunities are doing so outside their academic study. So they are not covered by the University’s insurance. It is mandatory that employers make sure all graduates and students undertaking work for them are covered by Employee Insurance. For more information please read our Internship Policy.
