Kieren Jones

Biography

Kieren Jones is Director of Studio Kieren Jones, a practicing design studio based in London. Kieren works not only as a designer but also as a maker, hand-crafting and creating many of his projects and installations himself. Kieren's work is narrative driven and often explores the relationship between craft and making in the contemporary context touching upon ideas of the amateur, sustainable future solutions and the creative use of materials.

He is best known for projects that explore and propose alternative future scenarios often responding to key issues that our present society are facing. These projects include The Sea Chair Project (2011), The Chicken Project (2008) and The Volcano Project (2013). Kieren's work has been extensively exhibited both in the UK and internationally at institutions such as the V&A, Somerset House, Design Museum, the Eyebeam Gallery in New York and at Gwangju Design Biennale 2011 curated by Chinese Artist, Ai Wei Wei.

Kieren has received a number of prestigious awards for his work and has been nominated for Design of the Year for The Sea Chair Project in 2012. Since 2010 he has been a Senior Tutor on MA Textile Futures at Central Saint Martins and has been developing further research initiatives through his post at the University. Kieren Jones studied Fine Art at Bath University, Three-dimensional Design at Brighton University and Design Product at the Royal College of Art.

My research is based on a conceptual and narrative approach to design. Through my work I am keen to explore and present alternative models for future living. Areas that I am most interested in include materiality, craft, our relationship to manufacturing and the need to build more radically sustainable solutions. I am also passionate about people and the notion of the amateur in design - looking to empower laypeople to become active participants in their surroundings. I often work collaboratively either with fellow designers or with interesting crafts people, makers or inventors.
