Visiting Student Programmes

UAL offers three different options for research degree students who would like to visit us as part of their studies: the Visiting Student Programme, the Study Abroad Programme, and the Exchange Student Programme.

You can begin your visit to UAL with one of these programmes at one of three entry points throughout the year:

To apply for one of these programmes, you must be currently studying for an MPhil or PhD at a Higher Education Institution (HEI) outside of the United Kingdom. Depending on your specific requirements, your choice of which programme to apply for will then be based on the following criteria:

The Visiting Student Programme is for students who:

  • Are currently studying for an MPhil or PhD at a Higher Education Institution (HEI) outside of the United Kingdom;
  • Would like to visit UAL for either 3 or 6 months as an ‘extra’ part of their research degree study.

The Study Abroad Programme is for students who:

  • Are currently studying for an MPhil or PhD at a Higher Education Institution (HEI) outside of the United Kingdom;
  • Would like to visit UAL for either 9 or 12 months as a substitute for one year of studyat their home HEI.

The Exchange Student Programme is for students who:

  • Are currently studying for an MPhil or PhD at a Higher Education Institution (HEI) outside of the United Kingdom with which University of the Arts London has an agreed Exchange Programme in place;
  • Would like to visit UAL for either 3, 6, 9 or 12 months as an ‘extra’ part of their research degree study.

Application process

1. Download the application form

Please read the Visiting Student Programmes Guidance Notes carefully before completing your application form.

2. Submit your application

Send your completed, signed and dated application form (available above), along with all applicable accompanying documents as email attachments, to researchdegrees@arts.ac.uk.

You must include the following documents as attachments to your email:

  • fully completed application form;
  • a copy of your current passport or identity card;
  • a copy of your current UK visa (if applicable);
  • evidence of your English language proficiency (if applicable).

University of the Arts London cannot guarantee that an application will be considered if it is sent to any other email address. Please ensure that your email, including all attachments, does not exceed 7MB, as we may not receive emails that are larger than this.

You will receive an email confirming receipt of your application within five working days of the date that you submit it. If you do not receive this confirmation, please contact the Research Student Team at researchdegrees@arts.ac.uk, or on +44 (0) 20 7514 2286. Please do not resend your application.

3. Letters of support

We also require the following letters of support to be sent directly from your home HEI to researchdegrees@arts.ac.uk before we can consider your application:

  • Letter of institutional support from your home Higher Education Institution (HEI) (please see Guidance Note B2)
  • Letter of academic support from your current main research supervisor (please see Guidance Note B3)
