The upper trace is the pencil position (actually calculation of motion through 3D space), colour coded black when the pencil was within 1cm of the paper, and red otherwise. The eye movements made during this 2-minute epoch are shown well (blue and black). This demonstrated the great regularity of Humphrey's eye movements, and the periodic pauses in his drawing.
