Theatre Design in Regional Theatre: Realising the Visual at The Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse 2003 – 2015
Wimbledon College of Arts
This research presents the first examination of the ways local identity is expressed through scenography at a major regional theatre complex: The Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse. In the face of mounting financial pressures and the global scrutiny the city’s role as European Capital of Culture (2008) brought, the theatres have to decide how to visualise Liverpool’s complex cultural identities to audiences at a local, national and international level.
Through investigating how scenic designs for ‘Made in Liverpool’ productions visualise Liverpool’s performed identities, this research aims to uncover the processes behind these visualisations. Part of the methodology will also provide an online Open- Source repository of materials generated by scenographic and production processes.
