University Brand Guidelines: their communication to and implementation by designer and non-designer users

The aim of this research is to gain an understanding of the content of current University Brand Guideline in the UK, and the communication of information to prospective users. The users of a Brand Guideline can be from a design or non-design background – both sectors pose different sets of problems in relationship to content and how that content and instruction is implemented. This project seeks to build upon the researcher’s own practice as a graphic designer (including the production of brand guidelines for end users), and asks whether current standards for guidelines can be followed successfully. The researcher has been teaching graphic design at the University of the Arts London since 2005; therefore the research will be analysed through the lens of graphic design.
