Being “Gurkha”, Becoming British: Fashion, Creativity and Diaspora Identity Formation Amongst Young Nepali Migrants
London College of Fashion
The aim of my research is to observe Nepali youth fashion, arts, activities and education in Britain to see how Nepali cultures are being preserved and how new cultures are being made.
In contrast to most British South Asian communities, a significant number of young Nepalis in Britain are moving into fashion and arts related education.
This project asks how this situation is made possible by the Gurkha heritage and migration story with the particularities of the British arts education system.
How do these convergences of arts education and activities facilitate new categories of racial, ethnic and global selves?
