Repositioning Jack B. Yeats as a Comic Strip Artist

Central Saint Martins

The focus of my research is the critically neglected comic strip work produced by the Irish painter Jack B. Yeats for a number of British publications between c. 1893 and 1917. My aim is to identify and analyse the corpus of his work, situating it in relation to contemporary media, entertainment and popular culture, as well as to the early development of the British comic.

I aim to interrogate the absence of this material from Irish art-historical accounts and to reassess Yeats as a comic strip artist. My inquiry will take place at the intersection of a number of related discourses - Comics Studies, Victorian and Edwardian Visual Culture, Art History, and Irish Cultural Studies.
