Exhibition and art making of the 1980s is increasingly historicised and attributed with changing the way that art is made, exhibited, collected and distributed today. In the still emerging field of exhibition histories the black arts movement awaits attention And yet the 'do-it-yourself' culture of the artist/curator associated with the YBAs of the 90s had very much been the modus operandi of the 80s and women were notably active in generating new approaches to exhibiting.

My research will recover and examine women’s exhibition history during the UK black arts movement, in order to discuss their curatorial strategies and role in shaping the art of that time.
