What does Perfectionism Mean in Contemporary Painting Practice?
CCW Graduate School
In contemporary art, perfectionism is associated with, at best, a cliché from historical art movements, and at worst a dangerous ideology. By comparing traditional, Asian and Western practices, with a focus on materiality, my research will challenge the current understanding of perfectionism in contemporary painting practice.
Through a theoretical and practice-led analysis, my research will use a case study method to examine traditional practices to include religious ritualistic forms of perfecting through Russian iconography and mandala painting, as well as specific contemporary artistic practices. As an outcome of my research, through reinterpreting historical stereotypes, my study will allow the discourse and practice of perfectionism, expression.
