Discovery in flux: adventure & safety factors in exploratory walking in changing urban landscapes

Central Saint Martins

Contemporary European cities are undergoing rapid spatial and social transition. Taking into account factors of adventure and safety - as equivalent to space and place, openness and definition respectively (Tuan 1977) - this research investigates how participatory wayshowing practices (Simonsen, Robertson 2013; Mollerup 2013) can encourage exploratory walking in changing urban landscapes. Using Hackney Wick in London as a case study area, the ultimate aim of this research is to develop a design framework for wayshowing responsive to change, informed by how much adventure and safety is needed by walkers who explore urban areas in flux.
