Haptic Backing Removal Simulator: A Training Tool for Conservators
(A. Geary and M. Sandy)

Summary

In paper conservation training, students are often required to gain many hours of experience in specific manual tasks. This is necessary to acquire the skills for the successful and safe treatment of delicate and fragile works of art. The haptic virtual environment offers a means of creating an enhanced training tool for conservators. Simulated conservation operations, such as backing removal, can be performed without risk to the objects, while building skills. Training can be accelerated through enhanced performance feedback using visual, aural and touch stimuli. The simulation software can also track the student’s progress by compiling statistical data on their performance that can be reviewed by the tutor.

Haptic 3D Drawing Construction in the Virtual Environment

(P. J. Lee and A. Geary)

Summary
This research project explores the ideas and processes for creating and visualising 3D drawings within the virtual space of the computer using haptic interface technology. The aim is to investigate the construction of 3D skeletal drawings, the components of which define edges and contoured surfaces representing the structures of the subject/s. By constructing the drawn elements in real time and imbuing them with haptic qualities such as gravity and inertia, the artist will be able to manipulate, interact with, explore and visualise stereoscopically this skeletal composition in a sensory manner beyond the scope of the traditional drawing experience.
