Haptec is exploring research applications in art, design
and conservation using touch-enabled (haptic) virtual environments. Many exciting
possibilities exist for the creation of novel and experimental creative environments,
tools, training devices and virtually enhanced presentation systems. Current
project areas for Haptec include conservation training
and drawing.
The technological demands of haptic interface systems have in the past, been
a barrier to their widespread use. However, as cost accessible computers have
become sufficiently powerful, the use of advanced haptic devices is now a realistic
possibility for many more users. Haptics is already widely implemented in medicine
and many scientific applications. It is now emerging as a new frontier in art
and design training and practice. Haptec is
developing projects within the arts context and is committed to research that
understands and addresses the imperatives of practitioners.
