Blackboard Scheduled Downtime

To prepare for the 2011/12 academic year Blackboard will be unavailable to all users on Monday, July 4th and Tuesday, July 5th. Access to Blackboard will resume on Wednesday 6th July at 9:00 am. This period of downtime is required for the creation of all Blackboard course sites for the 2011/12 academic year.

Staff User Guides Updated

A number of additions have been made to the Staff User Guides section. To accomodate this extra content, the Staff User Guides section has been broken down into a further five sub-sections: Blackboard Basics, Working With People, Organising Content, Communicating and Assessment.

Ammendment to July downtime

Due to the impact of the extended downtime on a number of students, we have shortened the period of time the system will be unavailable in July. Blackbaord will be unavailable to staff and students on the 5th and 6th July only; available again at 9am on Wednesday 7th July.
This will mean a delay of the upgrade to Blackboard 8 which will now take place during an additional 36 hours of downtime from 12.00 on the 31st July through the end of 1st August.

The upgrade to Blackboard 8

The extension of the scheduled downtime is required to facilitate the upgrade of Blackboard from version 7.2 to 8.0, and to move the service onto new hardware. This upgrade ensures that we continue to receive support for our Blackboard product, and will provide us with some new features. The upgrade from version 7 to 8 is not expected to affect your course site or the content on it, and requires no action on your part.
The system is now scheduled to be down from Saturday July 3rd at 12:00 until Wednesday July 7th at 09:00. During this period Blackboard will be unavailable to all users. Access to Blackboard 8 will begin on Wednesday 7th July at 09:00.

Content of 2010/11 sites

From Wednesday 7th July, staff will have access to the 2010/11 Blackboard course sites and will be able to start preparing their course sites for the next academic year. Please note as in previous years, we will automatically copy the content from your 2009/10 course sites to the 2010/11 course sites.

Pre-enrolled student access

As started last year all course sites will be made available to students from the beginning of September, and it will be possible to provide all new students before they enrol with access to their Blackboard course sites. This decision, taken by the Rector, is designed to improve communication with students, and to support the smooth integration of new students into the university.
