Esmeralda Munoz-Torrero is a Specialist Technician working in The Digital Space at London College of Communication. She facilitates workshops and provides creative support, especially when it comes to mastering software like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Vectorworks.
I work in The Digital Space, a creative learning space for students. Students come to use this area to work on their projects and receive technical support. I am here to aid students with any queries that they may have on how to accomplish their desired work outcome and to achieve their curriculum goals.
I am from the north of Spain, where I grew up. I moved to London at 22 so I'm comfortable saying that I feel at home here.
In my work, I facilitate workshops for students in need of learning essential skills on several computer packages, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Vectorworks. Because of my broad background working in the arts, I am able to apply my knowledge and skills of different processes to provide workshops and individual support to students preparing digital work for diverse disciplines. These include workshops like printmaking, 3D workshop, digital reprographics and photography.
I love the digital/analogue mix and LCC provides plenty of facilities to explore this route.
I really enjoy the problem solving aspect of teaching. It is great to see what students are able to achieve with a bit of confidence and technical knowledge. I love the fact that I'm able to guide them along and not only sharing my skills but also end up learning something in the process. I really enjoy the collaborative opportunities on offer, as I believe that working with people of very different backgrounds helps you grow as a person.
The list could be endless so I guess I'll focus on people that had a big influence on my own practice. People such as Hirosi Sugimoto, Roni Horn, Susan Collins, E.J. Marey, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Michael Kenna, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Bill Viola, Edward Burtynsky and Candida Höfer really inspire me. As I said the list could go on, but I guess the above mentioned mean a lot to me.
Empowering, Challenging, Creative.
London offers a vibrant and culturally rich environment. It's a great place to get inspired as it's a city full of energy and possibilities.
Take advantage of the technical areas at LCC and also of the wealth of knowledge that is available. Don't be shy to ask. Collaborate with people, share and have fun, embrace new perspectives. Don't forget to back up your work in more than one place!
