Ana Ortiz – BA (Hons) Advertising, Study Abroad
Ana Ortiz from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colombia, joined second year BA (Hons) Advertising on the Integrated Study Abroad Programme.
How was the course here different to the one back home?
My course in Colombia is all theory and here it is practical. Doing whole campaigns - that’s what I loved here. It’s the best, but there was not very much structure. That was hard. At my home university we had classes at specific times, which is what I was used to. Here it was do whatever you want, when you want.
What opportunities have you had here that you wouldn’t have had at your home institution?
All the contests and prizes for real campaigns. At home we only do work for the class and here it was for real campaigns in New York and a lot of places. For example, we had to do a campaign for The Young Ones in New York and it was a real campaign. At home its only fake campaigns for here it is real advertising with a chance to be published.
What is your favourite thing about London?
It’s really safe around here. I can be walking around at 2am and I know nothing is going to happen to me. I feel safe everywhere. It will be hard to go back to my parents' house.
I also love all the parks in London and the pubs are so nice.
What do you wish you had known before you got here?
It is better to live with roommates than to live alone. I decided to live in a studio, but I wish I had decided to live with flat mates so that my living was more social.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
It was a really, really great experience. I would do it again. I wish I could stay longer.
