Lab Ky Mo
Lab Ky Mo is a writer and director for film and TV, and a Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Contemporary Media Cultures course at London College of Communication.
Lab draws on his varied and extensive experience as a professional film-maker and film production teacher to inform his teaching in the classroom.
Originally art-college trained, Lab graduated from Central Saint Martins with a degree in Fine Art, before winning the prestigious Carl Foreman Screenwriting Fellowship to California, in conjunction with Bafta.
Lab’s debut feature film Nine Dead Gay Guys starred Steven Berkoff and was hailed by the Observer as “The most shocking film at the Cannes Film Festival” and reviewed by one Sunday Express critic as “the most outrageous and original British film of the year.” Having caused such a stir at Cannes, the film went on to win the audience award at the Montreal International Comedy Film Festival as well as the Best Film award at Dublin L&G Film Festival, and has been released in both the UK and US.
Most recently, Lab has been shooting and developing films in conjunction with B3 Media through the UK Film Council. A recent film My Dad the Communist was singled out by the UK Film Council as one of the standout short films of that year; it was subsequently picked up by the British Council for international distribution worldwide and won the audience award at the East London Film Festival. Lab won another audience award for his latest film 3 Mile Radius from the Wirral International Film Festival.
In between filming, Lab hones his skills directing TV commercials. He has won two golds at the Roses Advertising Awards with a risqué viral for Scruffs Workwear. This same viral clocked up over 2.5 million hits on YouTube and proved to be an ultra successful campaign for the client, leading to a 40% increase in sales. In addition, his MTV idents were short-listed for the best branding award in Promax UK. He has worked with agencies MTV Europe, WTCS, Banks Hoggins O'Shea FCB, DDB, Cheetham Bell JWT and Channel 4. Lab has helmed TV series 'The Cut' for the BBC and 'Hollyoaks' for Channel 4.
When not on shoots, Lab teaches film production, film directing and screenwriting disciplines at LCC. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in teaching Art & Design.
