Biography

Christopher Stewart tutors part-time on the MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography (online) course at London College of Communication. He is also a tutor at the New School of the Anthropocene in London.

Christopher is the recipient of numerous research awards including a recent Wellcome Trust Public Engagement Award as part of a collaborative team that included researchers from the Royal College of Art and the Wellcome Sanger Genome Campus in Cambridge (2020-2022). Previous awards include an Australia Council Visual Arts Award; Arts Council of England Visual Arts Award; UK Arts and Humanities Research Award and an Australian Postgraduate Award for the completion of his PhD.

Christopher has exhibited widely including at Whitechapel Gallery in London, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art in Norwich, National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford, Open Eye in Liverpool and Fotomuseum in Winterthur, Switzerland. He is represented by Gimpel Fils and has shown his work at Frieze London, Armory Show New York and at ARCO in Madrid.

Christopher's work is held in public and private collections including the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Martin Z. Margulies collection in Miami. His curatorial projects include Staging Disorder, including an accompanying publication (both with Dr. Esther Teichmann) for the University of the Arts London and Infraliminal for Stills Gallery in Edinburgh. His work is featured in important published surveys including Thames and Hudson’s World of Art series, The Photograph as Contemporary Art, 100 European Photographers, EXIT, Madrid and the Focal Press publication Langford’s Basic Photography.

Christopher studied photography at undergraduate level at the Polytechnic of Central London and West Surrey College of Art and Design in Farnham and completed his MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art in London. He holds a PhD from the University of New South Wales Faculty of Art and Design in Sydney.

From 2016 – 2020 Christopher was Programme Director of Photography at London College of Communication and has also held academic roles in other universities and art schools including as Head of Photography at the National Art School in Sydney, Associate Professor of Photography at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and the University of Technology Sydney and was the inaugural Programme Director of Photography, Moving Image and Sound at the University of Brighton where he was also Principal Lecturer and Course Director of MA Photography.
