This course will give you an understanding of the background and current use of alternative photography techniques and become familiar with the possibilities and opportunities they offer.
You will have the opportunity to make images using these techniques in the darkroom and be able to produce your own original images to a good standard. You will also have an understanding of the current use of these images in combination with digital techniques such as digitally printed negatives and the use of such images in print media.
- Historical context and how the legacy of alternative photography can be used in contemporary art
- Chemistry behind cyanotype and van dyck printing.
- Wavelengths of light and their applications to photography i.e. using ultraviolet light from the sun to expose prints
- Mixing cyanotype and van dyck chemistry and applying it to paper
- Composing and exposing photograms.
- Making a digital negative and exposing it on to sensitized paper.
- Processing cyanotype and van dyck prints.
- Toning cyanotype prints.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Create a selection of images using these techniques
- Acquire a historical knowledge of the two processes
- Understand alternative photography's place in contemporary image making techniques
- Have an understanding of the processes involved in cameraless techniques
Who Should Attend
Photography students, practicing artists and those interested in analogue and historical photography processes.
Beginner: You should have basic computer and photography skills. No alternative photography processes experience is required.

Melanie King is an artist, currently studying an MPhil in Printmaking at the Royal College of Art. Melanie's research is is currently focused on the parallel histories of photography and astronomy since the 19th century, and through her artistic practice aims to capture ancient light traveling from distant celestial objects onto photosensitive material.
Melanie is Director of the London Alternative Photography Collective, and has hosted monthly artist talks, regular exhibitions and symposia on the subject of experimental analogue photography since July 2013. Melanie convened the Shadows Symposium at Camberwell College of Art alongside the Photography and the Archive Research Centre at London College of Communication in May 2015.
Melanie has organised alternative photography workshops at The Photographer's Gallery, SALT Festival in Sandhornoy, Norway, Ditto Press and Brighton Photo Biennale.
Almudena Romero is a visual artist delivering educational projects to raise interest and understanding in early photographic processes and digital photography, and to reexamine the practice of these historically significant processes in the contemporary context.
She runs cameraless photography workshops as well as a variety of courses ranging from alternative photographic printing techniques to digital photography.
In 2015, she was commissioned by the V&A Museum and the Mapfre Foundation to deliver educational projects. She has also lectured at UAL,and Sotheby's Institute of Art. She runs public events including On Light Day for University College London, Wellcome Trust, and the Paradise Over Pavements Festival commissioned by Southwark Council.
Her practice has been exhibited throughout the UK and Internationally in galleries and festivals including the Brighton Photo Biennial and PhotoIreland, and has been features in TimeOut, DUST magazine, Uncertain States and Photomonitor.
Almudena is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy and obtained academic teaching qualifications with distinction.
This course will be taught by a respected industry expert.
Students will need to bring at least two high resolution digital image files to produce digital negatives on the courses.
