Community news is about finding local interest stories and learning to report news items on a regional scale. As a journalist, your patch is your territory. If there's a story to tell, you go out and tell it. Community journalists work hard to develop local relations, expose issues and can have a fundamental impact on both communities and local government.

This practical course will teach you the value of local news and how best to share it with readers. You will find out how to build and develop local contacts, uncover stories and write for regional press outlets.

Tutor information

After 37 years working in local newspapers, ending up as editor of four titles, I became an associate lecturer at LCC in January, 2012, teaching InDesign, effective writing and subbing for first year BA journalism and BAJ sports students.

I hold a professional qualification in journalism and fashion writing.
