Description

This is an intensive short course that explores alternative formats and styles of creative bookbinding structures. You will learn a mix of age-old traditional techniques combined with contemporary methods and skills for making books. During a series of practical demonstrations you will make sewn and non-sewn binding structures.

It is a hands-on, creative course where you will make at least five finished book structures, and you will be shown many examples of variants of these book structures. With your imagination, the possibilities are endless.  

This course will be of particular interest to artists and designers who want to create books of their own work.

Topics Covered

  • Star book
  • Double-fold concertina book
  • Diamond-fold book structure
  • Buttonhole stitch book - a contemporary style stitched book with no glue, exposed sewing and a card-weight wraparound cover
  • Clamshell style box covered in book cover 

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Make five finished book structures including concertina style binding, maze books and transformations 
  • Demonstrate a contemporary approach to container and box making for books 
  • Apply functional knowledge of creative book structures to your own work – perfect for portfolios or presents

Tutor information

With a background in design, Jane Drinkwater went on to study traditional craft bookbinding at The London College of Printing, now London College of Communication.  With a passion for handmade books she currently divides her time between making bookworks and boxes to commission and teaching creative bookbinding using age-old techniques. Students at LCC have been enjoying having their eyes opened to the possibilities of paper structures in her classes for several years.
